How install windows xp on an esternal hard disk and using it on asus eeepc

This guide will describe the steps to install windows xp on an external hard disk plugged in asus eeepc.

It works, but i don’t assume any responsibility for any damage to your computer, further reading means accepting this.

At the end you will have windows xp working on an external hard disk without touching any data in the internal solid state disk.

i spended a lot of time to find these informations , but i share to the community.

For this guide i used an asus eeepc 4 gb with webcam (no surf) but it would work with all version of eeepc.

What you need:

A windows xp pro installation cd

A pc with cd reader and usb port

An external hard disk formatted NTFS

The software xp3esd.exe, you can take it here

The software bcp006049.exe from hitachi, it creates bootable usb devices, you can find here

Let’s start!

format your external hard drive with hitachi’s utility
Copy all the contents of the installation cd of wp pro in a directory on your computer (not the asus eeepc)

Use the program xp3esd.exe on this directory, it will create an iso of a modified installation cd

Burn the iso or mount it on virtual cd reader with a program like daemon tool

Plug external usd hard disk on usb port

With the new cd in computer execute the command

X:\I386\winnt32.exe /syspart:Y: /tempdrive:Y: /makelocalsource /noreboot

(copy and paste)

where

X is the letter of the cd reader, Y is the letter of your usb external drive
The installation process will start, a part of it, it will copy necessary files on usb hard disk

Copy drivers of eeepc for windows ( you can use the cd in eeepc’s box or use internet for updated drivers (a list below) in a directory of the external hard disk (ie,y:/drivers)

plug the hard drive on the left usb port of asus eeepc

Turn on asus eeepc and press F2 to enter the bios

deactivate interal hard disk and set boot sequence removable device, hard disk

save and reboot

eeepc will continue windows installation of windows on esternal hard drive

 

In windows install the eeepc’s drivers

 

Update drivers from asus or intel. For audio is needed the fix: KB835221

thats al, now you have windows sp on an external hard disk to use with asus eeepc.

Considerations:

xp3esd.exe will modify usb drivers , so when you will try to install a usb device windows will warning you about this, install anyway.

Dont unplug hard drive with xp running : data lost is possible

remember to reactivate the internal hard disk when you want to use it

Plug the ext hard disk on left usb port

Sometimes win xp hangs on a blu screen during boot , this is due to an error about file paging, simply press alt+tab and ok.

Dont use nlite cause it deletes winnt32 ( or i dont know how to avoid this) maybe youcan use nlite after installation

Questa guida descriverà i passi necessari per installare windows xp su un hard disk esterno (nel mio caso, un hard disk esterno da 2.5 pollici autoalimentato da 60 gb) collegato ad un asus eeepc.

Io l’ho provato e funziona, ma non mi assumo nessuna responsabilità per eventuali danni causati seguendo questa guida, leggendo vi assumete tutta la responsabilità.

Alla fine avrete un asus eeepc che utilizzerà windows xp posto su un hard disk esterno.

Non andrà a toccare l’hard disk interno, che non sarà visibile da windows xp. La sdhc sarà visibile, ma io non ho provato ad usarla perchè non ce l’ho.

Per questa guida ho usato un asus eeepc da 4gb con webcam, ma dovrebbe funzionare anche per altre versioni.

L’hard disk esterno usato è un hard disk da 60 gb formattato NTFS.

Quello di cui avete bisogno :

L’eeepc asus

Un disco con windows xp pro (home pare non funzioni)

Un pc con porta usb e lettore cd che chiameremo computer fisso (può essere un notebook)

Un hard disk esterno formattato NTFS

Il software xp3esd.exe xp3esd.exe per installare win xp su hd usb,

Il software cp006049.exe della hitachi qui, rende i dispositivi usb bootabili

Iniziamo

Formattate l’hard disk esterno con il software della hitachi

Prendete il disco con win xp pro e copiatene tutto il contenuto in una directory sul computer fisso es chiamatela winxp/
Date in pasto a xp3esd.exe tale directory. Creerà una iso modificata. Salvate l’iso da qualche parte.

Masterizzate tale iso su un cd oppure (cosi ho fatto io) montatela su lettore cd virtuale con deamon tools

Con il nuovo cd di xp nel computer (o montato su cd virtuale) eseguite il comando seguente, da dos:

X:\I386\winnt32.exe /syspart:Y: /tempdrive:Y: /makelocalsource /noreboot

(copiate e incollate e mettete le lettere giuste, tutti questi spazi sono dovuti al formattatore del blog)

dove X è la lettera del lettore cd (virtuale o no) dove avete messo il cd di xp modificato e Y è la lettera dell’hard disk esterno usb.

Partirà l’installazione di windows sull’hard disk esterno, o almeno una sua prima parte (copia dei file necessari)

Dopo che è finita la copia, copiate in una directory dell’hard disk esterno i file dei driver dell’asus eeepc ( es nella directory Y:/drivers copiate tutto il cd dato in dotazione con l’asus eeepc (oppure copiateci i driver aggiornati, vedi più in basso)

Collegate l’hard disk esterno usb alla porta sinistra usb dell’asus eepc (2) pare che le altre porte diano problemi.

Accendete l’asus eeepc e premete subito F2 finchè non entrate nel bios

Qui disattivate l’hard disk interno e mettete come sequenza di boot removable devices, hard disk

salvate e uscite

l’asus eepc ripartirà proseguendo l’installazione di winxp pro sull’hard disk

Una volta terminata installate i driver precedentemente copiati es nella directory drivers ( c’e’ un programma che installa tutto automaticamente).

Installate i driver più recenti dal sito asus o intel. Per l’audio serve la fix: KB835221

Ecco fatto, avete win xp su hard disk esterno che potete usare con l’asus eeepc.

Considerazioni

Il programma xp3esd.exe và a modificare i driver usb, quindi d’ora in poi quando installerete qualche dispositivo usb, win xp dirà che il dispositivo non ha superato la prova di compatibilità. Voi installate comunque.

Se staccate l’hard disk a computer acceso win si potrebbe bloccare e perdere dati sull’hard disk

Per riavviare l’asus dall’hard disk interno dovete riabilitarlo nel bios : in tal caso l’ usb collegato verrà visto come hard disk esterno normalissimo e potete scriverci , ma non scrivete nelle directory di sistema altrimenti rovinate l’installazione di windows. (oppure basta abilitare i due hard disk e tenere premuto esc durante il boot per far partire il sistema operativo da hard disk esterno, ma non ho ancora provato)

attaccate l’ hard disk sempre dalla porta di sinistra quando volete usarlo come sistema operativo.

Se non parte accertatevi, dal bios, di avere disabilitato l’hard disk interno.

Certe volte quando parte xp, il boot si blocca sulla schermata blu con su scritto win xp, questo accade perche’ c’e’ un errore relativo al file di paging. Tale avviso non si vede, per evidenziarlo premente atl+tab e date ok

Non usate nlite poichè cancella il file winnt32 ( forse io non conosco i settaggi giusti). Probabilmente lo potrete usare su xp una volta installato ( oppure usate xplite credo).
